BYD’s New Song Pro Makes Its Debut
Market Entry Application Submitted
Chinese automaker BYD has submitted a market entry application for the all-new Song Pro to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), marking the official launch of this mid-size SUV in the Chinese market. The vehicle features BYD’s iconic “Dragon Face” design language and introduces the fifth-generation DM plug-in hybrid power system for the first time.
Initial Reveal and Product Planning
First unveiled online in February 2024, the Song Pro was spotted during road tests in China, shrouded in heavy camouflage. BYD’s product plan had originally slated the model for an official launch in July 2024. With the application for a sales permit, the SUV’s core specifications have now been revealed.
Exterior Design and Features
Continuity and Innovation in Design
The new Song Pro retains the silhouette of its predecessor, with a distinctive line that runs the length of the vehicle. The lower body sports plastic trim, and the roofline is slightly sloping. The front end, however, sees significant updates with the “Dragon Face” design, featuring slender headlights connected by a chrome element bearing the “Song” hieroglyph. The front bumper’s large trapezoidal grille and sporty air intakes create an X-shaped front mask.
Rear Design Simplification
While the rear design remains largely unchanged, with a single taillight unit, the “Build Your Dreams” inscription has been replaced with a BYD badge, reflecting a move towards a more minimalist aesthetic.
Dimensions and Specifications
Detailed Dimensions and Overhangs
According to MIIT filings, the new Song Pro measures 4735/1860/1710 mm in length, width, and height, with a 2712 mm wheelbase—3 mm shorter than the previous model. Both the front and rear track widths are 1565 mm, and the approach and departure angles are 18 and 22 degrees, respectively. The front and rear overhangs are 1008 mm and 1015 mm.
Power System and Performance
Advanced Powertrain and Efficiency
The Song Pro is powered by BYD’s fifth-generation DM system, which includes a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated BYD472QC engine producing 74 kW (99 hp) and a 160 kW (215 hp) TZ210XYB synchronous permanent magnet electric motor from BYD’s subsidiary, FinDreams.
Battery and Weight Details
Equipped with an LFP Blade battery by FinDreams, the new Song Pro offers an 18.3 kWh capacity, suitable for a 93 km range. The battery pack, weighing 181 kg, contributes to the vehicle’s curb weight of 1765 kg, which is 15 kg lighter than the previous model with the same battery capacity. It’s noteworthy that the old model had a shorter range of 85 km (WLTC).
