BYD has once again demonstrated its strength in the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) market, securing nine of the top ten spots for best-selling models in China for the month of July. According to the latest figures from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), BYD’s models accounted for a significant portion of the 318,000 PHEVs sold, which represents a substantial 73% year-on-year increase and a 33.7% share of the total new energy vehicle (NEV) market.

The CPCA data indicates that BYD’s PHEV models are not only popular but are also driving the growth of the NEV market in China. The company’s dominance extends to the year-to-date sales charts, where only three models outside of BYD make it to the top ten list. The only non-BYD model to break into the July top ten is the Chery Fulwin T9, a mid-size SUV that has been gaining attention in the market.

BYD’s success is not solely attributed to its advanced DM 5.0 technology, as only about half of the top-selling models utilize this version of BYD’s PHEV system. The company’s broad range of models catering to different market segments has contributed to its widespread appeal.

However, it’s important to note that the sales figures reported by the CPCA are based on wholesale rather than retail numbers. This means that the actual consumer demand may not align perfectly with the reported figures, as producers may encourage dealers to purchase inventory that doesn’t immediately convert to final sales.

Additionally, the data from the CPCA distinguishes between extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) and PHEVs, which some argue should be treated similarly due to their operational similarities. Despite these nuances, the data clearly illustrates BYD’s commanding presence in China’s PHEV market.

The overall NEV market in China continues to thrive, with July seeing a record 50.7% of car sales attributed to NEVs, including both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and PHEVs. This milestone is supported by government incentives aimed at boosting the adoption of electric vehicles and reducing reliance on traditional fuel vehicles.

As the Chinese government continues to promote the NEV market through financial incentives and policy support, it is expected that manufacturers like BYD will maintain their growth trajectory, further solidifying their positions in the market.
