BYD Song Pro DM-i Launches in Mexico at a Price Surge
The launch of the Song Pro DM-i in Mexico with the older PHEV system, just as the new generation is about to be released in China, raises questions about BYD’s market strategy.
Mexico City, September 4, 2024 – BYD’s popular plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), the Song Pro DM-i, has officially entered the Mexican market with a significant price gap compared to its home country. The Mexican version, available in a single PHEV configuration, is priced at approximately $30,200 USD, which is a stark contrast to its Chinese pricing that ranges from $15,400 – $19,650 USD.
The model launched in Mexico mirrors the Beyond edition available in China, which is priced at $17,200 USD, indicating a $13,000 premium for Mexican consumers. This disparity is attributed to various factors including import duties and market-specific adjustments.
Equipped with a 12.8-inch rotatable central infotainment screen, the Mexican Song Pro DM-i comes with advanced features such as a 360-degree surround camera, tire pressure monitoring, ESP stability control, hill start assist, and full-speed adaptive cruise control. The vehicle dimensions are 4738mm in length, 1680mm in width, and 1710mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2712mm.
Powering the Mexican edition is a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine producing 81 kW, coupled with an electric motor that delivers up to 145 kW. The vehicle is fitted with a 13.8 kWh lithium iron phosphate blade battery from BYD’s subsidiary FinDreams, offering an all-electric NEDC range of 71 km. It is noteworthy that a version with an 18.3 kWh battery pack, providing a 110 km all-electric range, is available in China but has not been introduced to the Mexican market.
The Song Pro DM-i is anticipated to receive an upgrade to BYD’s fifth-generation PHEV system, DM 5.0, in the near future. This new system, which has been spotted in testing, will feature a less powerful 74 kW 1.5-liter engine but will be paired with a more potent 160 kW electric motor. The DM 5.0 technology is expected to significantly enhance the vehicle’s comprehensive cruising range and fuel efficiency.
