BYD’s launch of the Song L and Song Plus DM-i signifies a significant advancement in PHEV technology. With their impressive range, fuel efficiency, and feature-rich interiors, these models are poised to make a strong impact in the market, further solidifying BYD’s position as a pioneer in the EV sector.

BYD, a leading name in the electric vehicle (EV) industry, has once again pushed the boundaries of innovation with the launch of the new Song L DM-i and the updated Song Plus DM-i. These models, introduced on July 25, are not just new additions to the lineup but represent a significant step forward in plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology.

Both the Song L and Song Plus DM-i are powered by BYD’s fifth-generation PHEV system, which is a testament to the company’s commitment to advancing hybrid technology. The DM 5.0 system, which includes a 1.5-liter engine with a maximum power output of 74 kW and an electric motor that delivers 160 kW, is a powerhouse that promises performance without compromising on efficiency.

One of the standout features of these new models is the impressive range they offer. With three battery pack options—12.9 kWh, 18.3 kWh, and 26.6 kWh—these vehicles can achieve pure electric ranges of 75 km, 112 km, and 160 km respectively, under the CLTC cycle. This is a significant improvement over previous models and is set to make these cars attractive to consumers looking for the flexibility of an electric drive with the reliability of a traditional engine.

The fuel consumption figures, as calculated by the NEDC standard, are impressively low at 3.88, 3.90, and 3.93 l/100 km for the three powertrains. However, it’s worth noting that the more stringent WLTC figures, which are often quoted by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), show a slightly higher consumption of 4.93, 4.95, and 4.98 l/100 km. Nevertheless, the combined range of up to 1500 km is a remarkable achievement.

The Song L DM-i, in particular, is an exciting model. As a new compact SUV, it fills a gap in BYD’s Dynasty range, sitting between the Song Pro DM-i and the Tang DM-i. Its distinctive styling, with a large grille for engine heat dissipation and unique wheel arches, sets it apart. The interior is equally impressive, with a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, a LCD instrument panel, and a head-up display, all powered by a 6nm processor chip. The top-spec versions also come with a 10-speaker Infinity sound system and DiPilot driver assistance, making it a well-rounded package for tech-savvy consumers.

The Song Plus DM-i, while an upgrade of an existing model, benefits from the latest DM 5.0 powertrain technology. It retains the familiar dimensions and overall design but introduces subtle updates, such as the illuminated BYD logo at the rear, which adds a touch of modernity.
