The Song L starts at RMB 189,800 and has received more than 28,000 pre-orders since pre-sales began on October 31.
BYD (OTCMKTS: BYDDF) has officially launched the Song L, a shooting brake SUV, at a significantly lower starting price than in pre-sale, underscoring the growing competition in China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) market.
The Song L is available in five versions, all of which are battery electric vehicles (BEVs), with starting prices of RMB 189,800 ($26,700), RMB 199,800, RMB 209,800, RMB 229,800, and RMB 249,800, respectively.
BYD initially unveiled the Song L concept at the Shanghai auto show in April and began previewing its production version in August. BYD’s model range includes the Dynasty and Ocean series, and the model belongs to the Dynasty series.
Pre-sales for the Song L began on October 31, when the five versions were offered at pre-sale starting prices of RMB 220,000, RMB 240,000, RMB 240,000, RMB 260,000, and RMB 280,000 respectively.

From the start of pre-sales to today, the Song L has garnered over 28,000 pre-orders, the company said.
The Song L is the second shooting brake-style SUV under BYD’s umbrella. The NEV maker’s premium Denza brand launched the Denza N7 on July 3, the first such model for the BYD group.
Additionally, the BYD Ocean array also includes a shooting brake-style SUV, the Sea Lion 07, which was unveiled on the first day of the Guangzhou auto show on November 17 and is expected to begin deliveries in the first half of 2024.
Based on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 platform, the Song L measures 4,840 mm in length, 1,950 mm in width and 1,560 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,930 mm.
Its single-motor versions are available with peak motor power options of 150 kW and 230 kW, while the only dual-motor version has motors with peak power of 150 kW and 230 kW, respectively.
The model’s four-wheel drive version has a total system power of 380 kW and a combined total torque of 670 Nm, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds and has a top speed of 201 km/h.
The Song L is available in three battery range versions with CLTC ranges of 550 km, 602 km and 662 km, with the 602 km version being four-wheel drive.
Similar to many other car companies’ new model launches, BYD is offering Song L customers benefits including a 24-term zero-interest loan, a RMB 5,000 trade-in subsidy, and free charging piles.
