Aito M9, a full-size SUV developed in collaboration with Huawei and Dongfeng’s Series, has achieved the highest safety rating of five stars in China’s C-NCAP safety and crash tests.
In a significant milestone for the electric vehicle EV market, the Aito M9, a full-size SUV developed in collaboration with Huawei and Dongfeng‘s Series, has achieved the highest safety rating of five stars in China’s C-NCAP safety and crash tests. This accolade positions the Aito M9 as the safest vehicle evaluated by the China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC), surpassing its main competitor, Li Auto’s L9.
The Aito M9 boasts impressive dimensions of 5230/1999/1800 mm and a spacious wheelbase of 3110 mm, designed to accommodate six passengers in a 2+2+2 layout. The all-electric BEV variant delivers a powerful 390 kW (523 hp) output, courtesy of two electric motors, paired with a 100 kWh battery pack that supports a CLTC range of 630 km. The EREV version offers 365 kW (489 hp) and an electric range of 225-275 km under CLTC conditions. Priced between 469,800 and 569,800 yuan (approximately $64,700 to $78,500 USD), the Aito M9 presents a compelling option for consumers seeking a safe and spacious EV.
The C-NCAP safety program, established in 2006 under CATARC, has undergone significant improvements, aligning closely with the stringent Euro NCAP assessment criteria. The Aito M9’s five-star rating, with a remarkable 93.9% overall performance score, is a testament to the vehicle’s safety excellence. This score is 11.2% higher than the average performance of models tested in the 2021 C-NCAP evaluations and 2.6% above the Li Auto L9 EREV crossover’s performance.
In the specific segments of the C-NCAP test, the Aito M9 excelled in occupant protection with a score of 96.98%, while pedestrian protection, although the weakest category for the M9, still achieved a commendable 75.38%, surpassing the average by 3.2%. The vehicle shined in the active safety segment, securing the highest score of 97.79%.
Since its launch in February of this year, the Aito M9 has garnered considerable attention, with cumulative sales reaching 58,823 units from February to July 2024. The vehicle’s success not only underscores the growing demand for EVs in China but also highlights the importance of safety in the rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
